Before the predicted madness of Monday’s trade deadline was an issue, Brian Burke had already sent three Leafs packing for future draft picks. In the trades Toronto acquired two young players who Burke hopes will come into their own in the coming years.
It wasn’t a huge move, but it showed that Burke is keen on rebuilding the franchise with young talent rather then with old veterans.
The players shipped out were Tomas Kaberle, Francois Beauchemin and Kris Versteeg. In return the Leafs acquired two first round picks, a third round pick, two conditional draft picks, Jake Gardiner and Joffrey Lupul.
Six points now separate them from a playoff position in the Eastern Conference, but if Burke’s moves are any indication of the clubs prospective chances, it looks like the Leafs may be more focused on the 2011-2012 season.
Off-season trades will be high on the clubs agenda come this summer. A shake-up is just what the team needs and more moves are inevitable.
