The leadership reins of the Liberal Party are being passed to the returning Queen of B.C. politics, Christy Clark. Love her, hate her or feel a total indifference, Clark has promised to re-inspire small business in British Columbia with a number of simple initiatives.
Her business growth plan is stabilized by her commitment to put families first, which she has outlined in a four-part platform. One of those parts is the creation of wealth through new business.
Clark plans to ignite growth in three ways. The first is a Business Creation Tax Credit for angel investors looking to invest in new businesses. This will benefit the amount of smaller companies who will receive investment from larger players. The investors will receive the tax break, which Clark hopes will encourage more growth.
The second measure is a refundable payroll tax rebate for start-up businesses in their first year. This will lighten the payroll burden for small companies trying to survive their first year.
The third measure has to do with patents. Clark wants to make it easier for the university community to apply for patents for their discoveries. This, she hopes, will entice researchers to ignite small businesses of their own once completing their education.
What do all these measures have to say about the direction of the B.C. economy? Now, more than ever, it pays to take a giant step forward and attempt a small business project of your own.
